How to write the letter Y
Capital Y: Little slant down to the middle, little slant in from the right to meet it, then a big line straight down from the meeting point.
Lowercase y: Slant down to the right, then a longer slant down to the left that drops into the basement.
Watch for: The lowercase tail must sink below the baseline.
Tips for teaching the letter Y
Say the letter name and its sound before tracing ("Y says y as in yo-yo"). Have your child trace the gray letters with a finger first, then a crayon or thick pencil — fine-motor control comes before pencil grip. One page a day beats five pages once a week, and always end on a success.
